Email marketing software for creators: six tools compared
The best email marketing software for your creator business is the plan that fits your list, sending schedule and required features. This guide compares Beehiiv, Kit, Brevo, MailerLite, ActiveCampaign and HighLevel for newsletters, freelance services and course businesses. It separates free-list capacity from automation access and compares actual requirements before headline prices.
List capacity
Which addresses count, how many can be stored, and what changes your billing tier?
Sends and features
How many messages must go out, by when, and with which automation or integration?
1. Which email marketing software fits your business?
Compare a named plan against your complete requirement. Contact storage, monthly sends and automation access are separate constraints. A generous allowance in one column does not remove a limit in another.
| Software | Use case and deciding check |
|---|---|
| Beehiiv | Publishing and growing a newsletter. Check the audience tier and paid automation access. |
| Kit, formerly ConvertKit | A creator audience connected to offers. Distinguish free broadcasts from paid email sequences. |
| Brevo | Campaigns and customer marketing. Check daily sends, stored contacts and contacts allowed into automations separately. |
| MailerLite | Email campaigns and automation. Check subscriber, send and active-feature limits together. |
| ActiveCampaign | More demanding automation requirements. Check the actions and triggers available on the selected plan. |
| HighLevel | Service businesses needing contacts, a pipeline and bookings. Add email usage to the subscription cost. |
This selection focuses on independent businesses that publish, sell a service or offer education. Specialized cold outreach, high-volume transactional infrastructure and advanced ecommerce require their own assessment. We have not assigned performance scores or claimed that each platform was tested in live campaigns.
2. What should put each platform on your shortlist?
Beehiiv: shortlist it for a newsletter-led business
Our reason to consider it: publication is central to your business and you want to assess audience growth alongside publishing. If the purchase decision instead depends on an external checkout event, verify the necessary connection and plan before committing.
At 1,000 subscribers, Beehiiv documents Lite at $59 per month when paid monthly, or $49 per month billed annually, totaling $588 per year. That is a reference for one audience tier, not the price for every list size. Our Beehiiv review covers the product and plan trade-offs in greater depth.

Kit: shortlist it for creator sequences and connected offers
Our reason to consider it: your decision depends on automated sequences and connections to the tools used to sell or deliver your work. Kit Free accommodates up to 10,000 subscribers and broadcasts; email sequences and Visual Automations need a paid plan. Free audience capacity alone does not satisfy an automated follow-up requirement.
Creator is documented at $39 per month for up to 1,000 subscribers. The pricing page also shows $390 billed yearly for that tier. Dividing the annual charge by twelve gives $32.50 per month; the prominent monthly equivalent may be rounded. Compare the actual annual charge with the monthly option.

Brevo: shortlist it after checking storage and sends
Our reason to consider it: you need campaigns and customer marketing, with a plan selected around the actual audience and sending requirement. Brevo's English documentation lists Starter from $9 and Standard from $18 per month. These are entry references, not quotes for the scenarios below; confirm billing terms, add-ons and your selected tier.
Its paid 5,000-send tier allows up to 500 stored contacts, while the 10,000-send tier allows up to 1,500. A 1,000-contact list therefore does not fit that first paid tier even when monthly sends are below 5,000. Describing the product only as “pay per send” misses a relevant condition.
MailerLite: shortlist it for an email-focused setup
Our reason to consider it: campaigns and email automation are the core requirement. Its current paid structure uses Comfort and Power. Comfort allows 50 active automations and monthly sends equal to ten times the subscriber tier's ceiling. Power advertises unlimited sending and feature use, subject to fair-use terms.
Public entry pricing for Comfort starts at $12 per month. That starting figure does not establish the cost of a larger list. We could not reliably extract every scenario's quote from the dynamic pricing selector, so we have not filled the gaps with older prices. Existing paid accounts may move to the new structure at renewal or after a manual plan change.

ActiveCampaign: shortlist it when workflow depth matters
Our reason to consider it: a required automation is more demanding than a straightforward broadcast or short introduction. Its documentation distinguishes trigger, action and segmentation access by plan. Starter has a five-action limit per automation. Map your requirement before assuming the entry plan can run it.
Select the first plan that covers the necessary actions, audience and sending allowance, then obtain its current quote. We have not priced a more complex workflow using an entry-level amount when its eligibility has not been established.

HighLevel: shortlist it for a service business with a sales pipeline
Our reason to consider it: contacts, pipeline stages and appointments belong in the same buying decision as email follow-up. Buying a broader suite solely to send a monthly issue may create unnecessary cost and maintenance. If you already use it, compare the incremental email cost instead.
Starter is listed at $97 per month or $970 per year. LC Email usage is additional. Our HighLevel review covers the wider suite; the question here is whether its combined scope fits your requirements better than a dedicated email tool.

3. Which plan fits? Four email software buying scenarios
These are illustrative purchasing scenarios, not campaign results. Eligibility conclusions are deductions from documented limits. Passing a quota check does not prove that an integration or live workflow has been tested.
1,000 subscribers, a same-day newsletter and a welcome sequence
All three requirements must fit: list size, sending deadline and sequence access. Kit Free does not include the sequence. MailerLite Free's 250-subscriber limit is too low. Brevo Free's 300-email daily cap cannot accommodate an issue to all 1,000 recipients on the same day.
This moves those three options into a paid-plan comparison. Examine Beehiiv Lite at 1,000 subscribers, Kit Creator, a MailerLite Comfort tier covering your list and sends, and a Brevo tier that stores the full list. ActiveCampaign also requires an action-limit check.
Decision: compare eligible plans before comparing prices. Then check event connections, total sending requirements and maintenance. A provider being admissible does not make it the lowest-cost or best-performing option.
5,000 subscribers, one monthly broadcast and no sequence
A large, lightly contacted list does not automatically require paid automation. Kit Free is an option to examine because its documented subscriber and broadcast allowances cover this case. Beehiiv Free caps at 2,500 subscribers, and MailerLite Free cannot accommodate the list. For Brevo, check storage and the required sending deadline as well as the monthly total.
Decision: assess the eligible option's publishing experience, branding and data requirements. If you later add a sequence, repeat the comparison: the conclusion for broadcasts alone does not establish eligibility for automation.
A Thinkific course and emails based on enrollment or purchases
The integration and its plan requirement become deciding factors. Kit's Thinkific app requires Creator or Creator Pro. It syncs students and course-related tags; purchase-history reporting requires the appropriate import option. Enrollment in a free course is different from a paid purchase.
For other platforms, identify the exact event needed: enrollment, purchase or progress. An API listing is not evidence that all of those events are already connected. Establish whether a native app, connector or custom work is required and who will maintain it.

Decision: a documented connection that supplies the necessary data can outweigh a slightly lower subscription. For the separate course-platform decision, see our Thinkific course creation guide and Thinkific plans.
A freelancer or agency already paying for a CRM
Compare incremental costs with the cost of an additional stack. If you already pay for HighLevel to manage appointments and pipeline stages, the existing subscription does not become a new expense solely because you add campaigns. Starting a new account requires counting the full subscription.
LC Email is documented at $0.675 per 1,000 emails. Incoming, outgoing and forwarded email can incur charges, while address verification is billed separately. A campaign-only estimate therefore does not cover every possible usage charge.

Decision: keep the existing setup if it supports the required functions and data. Add a separate email platform when a specific limitation justifies the subscription, integration and ongoing maintenance.
4. How should you compare email automation features?
Replace a generic “automation included” checkbox with the capabilities your requirement needs. A subscription can permit automated messages while limiting the trigger, actions, active workflows or participating contacts.
- The event is available
- The form, checkout or course platform must supply the event you need, and the email plan must be able to use it.
- The audience can be distinguished
- Check that required customer, interest and subscription data can be used in the selected offer. A purchase tag and an email-permission status serve different purposes.
- The workflow fits the allowance
- Count required actions and active automations, not just subscribers. Add forms and other relevant feature-use limits to the requirement.
- The connection is maintainable
- Identify who checks failed events and what relies on a paid connector. Technical possibility and a fully configured integration are different purchasing propositions.
Beehiiv documents conditional branches and automation exits. Treating it as a platform with no conditional workflow logic would be inaccurate. The useful comparison is the feature access and data connection required by your business.

Our creator workflow guide explains how to design the journeys. Use the design as an input to this buying comparison rather than rebuilding the strategy around a product label.
5. When is free email marketing software enough?
A free plan is enough when list size, sends, timing and required features all fit. A premium trial can temporarily unlock a function that will not remain available on the free subscription.
| Plan | Check before choosing it |
|---|---|
| Beehiiv Free | Up to 2,500 subscribers. Check automation requirements separately from audience capacity. |
| Kit Free | Up to 10,000 subscribers and broadcasts; sequences and Visual Automations require a paid plan. |
| Brevo Free | 300 daily sends. A large stored list does not mean you can send to everyone in a day. |
| MailerLite Free | 250 subscribers and 2,500 monthly sends, with additional active-feature limits. |

Stored contacts are not the same as automation contacts
Brevo documents a 2,000-unique-contact limit for entry into active automations on Free and Starter. A person entering two automations counts once. Once the limit is reached, existing participants continue but new contacts cannot enter. This is a separate constraint from storage and email sends.
Source: Brevo's automation contact limit.
What changes when an older free-plan comparison becomes outdated?
MailerLite documents a reduction from 500 to 250 subscribers and from 12,000 to 2,500 monthly sends. Depending on the exceeded limit, sending, automation or imports can pause. Free also has limits including three active automations and three forms. An older recommendation may therefore describe a setup the current free plan no longer supports.
6. How to compare email marketing software costs fairly
Price the same requirement over the same period. Record audience size, sends, essential features, users and paid connections. Keep the displayed currency and tax treatment explicit. The dollar amounts in this guide are published references, not a guarantee of regional checkout availability or a personalized quote.
For annual billing, compare the actual annual charge before using a monthly equivalent. Rounding can change a displayed monthly figure. Check renewal terms and cancellation conditions instead of assuming an annual discount gives monthly flexibility.
Subscription comparison: eligible plan + usage or overages + required add-ons + paid connectors.
Review separately: migration work, rebuilt forms, permission and suppression records, and subscriptions you can actually retire.
Use the monthly send calculator in the strategy guide to estimate volume. Then match that requirement to current plans. The calculator does not quote vendor prices.
Does deleting subscribers immediately lower your bill?
Not necessarily. MailerLite documents cumulative counting within a billing cycle: an address active earlier in the cycle may continue to count after deletion until the counter resets. Paid-plan subscriber or send overages can trigger a tier increase. Confirm billing behavior before relying on a cleanup to change the current charge.

Does a large monthly allowance guarantee a same-day send?
No. Check daily caps, account restrictions and any applicable sending ramp-up. A monthly allowance cannot override a daily cap. Also distinguish the platform accepting a send from the recipient receiving it in a primary inbox.
7. How to make your final email platform decision
Reduce the shortlist to two eligible offers, then compare total cost and maintenance. A missing essential feature eliminates a plan before brand preference becomes relevant.
- Newsletter-led publication: examine Beehiiv and Kit; add MailerLite when its functions and allowances match your publishing requirements.
- Campaigns and customer marketing: compare Brevo and MailerLite on storage, sends and required automation access.
- Courses or several offers: establish the available events and connections, then assess Kit, ActiveCampaign or another eligible platform.
- Services with a pipeline and bookings: compare HighLevel against the complete alternative stack, or assess incremental costs if the CRM is already in use.
For each finalist, write down one reason to choose it and one condition that would disqualify it. If the differences do not affect your actual requirements, prefer a setup you can maintain and a bill you can understand.
Confirm the checkout amount and account entitlements before subscribing. Marketing pages and help documentation can update at different times. A conflict about an essential feature deserves confirmation from the vendor.
Questions to resolve before subscribing
Do Leadpages or Thinkific automatically remove the need for email software?
No conclusion follows just from using a landing-page or course platform. Identify the email functions already available, the data it can transmit and the remaining requirement. An additional tool should solve a specific gap rather than duplicate something you already pay for.
Can a software comparison guarantee which tool reaches the inbox best?
Not from feature pages alone. A deliverability ranking would need comparable measurements and an explicit test method. This guide does not claim one; it compares documented plan access, limits and billing conditions.
Should I cancel the old platform before migrating?
Allow time to verify exports, suppression records, forms and event connections before cancellation. A temporary subscription overlap may be a real migration cost. Check renewal dates and the time available to retrieve your data.
Research method, sources and comparison limits
Official pricing and help documentation were researched on October 16, 2026. Recommendations by use case are our editorial analysis of published conditions. The buying scenarios are illustrative; this is not a hands-on test of all six platforms or a conversion or deliverability benchmark.
Prices remain in the displayed currency, with billing periods specified where established. Brevo and MailerLite entry prices are not scenario quotes. We have not reconstructed unavailable tier prices or inferred a regional price by converting the French version. Check the current checkout amount and account rights before subscribing.
