Thinkific AI Course Builder: Create and Sell a Course with ChatGPT
Use ChatGPT to prepare teaching material, then use Thinkific to organize the lessons, assess learners and sell access. The useful question is not whether AI can produce an outline: it is whether you can turn that outline into a course someone can complete.
Quick answer: Thinkific’s new AI Course Outline Generator creates chapter and lesson titles, not the finished lesson content. For this workflow, prepare and review your drafts in ChatGPT, add the material to Thinkific, build the assessments, configure payment and check the learner journey. A separate ChatGPT drafting workflow does not require Thinkific Plus.
Official reference: what the AI outline generator actually creates.
This is a documentation-based implementation guide, with an illustrative course example. It does not report an account test or sales results. Interface details can differ between the Classic and New Course Builders.
What does the Thinkific AI course builder actually do?
The outline generator helps create the structure; the quiz generator helps assess content you supply. Treat these as separate jobs. A neatly organized curriculum can still contain empty lessons or an exercise that does not teach the promised skill.

Accuracy, usefulness and the relationship between the promise, teaching and assessment.
Thinkific’s outline tool accepts a description of the topic, audience and learning outcome. Review its proposed structure before creating the course. Use an existing ChatGPT outline as a planning input; do not describe pasting a prompt as importing a complete course.

Choose the builder before producing a large library. The New Course Builder supports mixed content blocks in a lesson, whereas Classic uses separate lesson types. Thinkific says course materials cannot be moved between these two experiences. Check essential integrations first if you plan to extend the learner experience.

Start with one outcome: a client onboarding mini-course
Our example is a course for freelance designers who want to collect a usable brief before starting a project. The end result is a completed brief, a list of unresolved questions and a clear next action. This is an editorial example, not a claim about a course we sold.
A sensible first version could use three short chapters:
- Identify the decision-maker. Explain the difference between the person requesting work and the person approving it. Ask the learner to map the people involved in their next project.
- Collect the brief. Work through an invented client request, identify missing information and complete a downloadable worksheet.
- Confirm the scope. Show how to summarize deliverables, exclusions and open questions. End with a quiz built from the material actually taught.
Keep this small enough to inspect lesson by lesson. A useful launch decision is: “Can a learner complete the intended task with the material provided?” Counting generated modules does not answer that question.
How to prepare course content in ChatGPT for Thinkific
Prepare a consistent lesson package before opening the course editor: objective, explanation, worked example, practice task and assessment notes. This makes the transfer manageable and exposes missing teaching material early.
Prompt 1: turn your source material into a lesson plan
I am preparing a three-chapter mini-course for freelance designers.
Outcome: complete a client brief and identify unanswered scope questions.
Use only the teaching notes I provide below.
For each lesson, return:
- one observable learner objective;
- the source passages supporting the explanation;
- a worked example using fictional client details;
- a short practice task;
- what a successful answer must demonstrate.
Flag missing information instead of inventing it. Separate proposed
teaching ideas from facts supported by my notes. Do not add chapters
unless they are necessary for the stated outcome.
Teaching notes: [paste your approved material]
Read the result as a plan. Remove unsupported claims, check the source references and make sure the practice task matches the objective. Then draft one lesson at a time. Ask for a specific reading level and approximate length rather than “a comprehensive course.”
Prompt 2: draft a lesson that can be reviewed
Draft the lesson “Identify the project decision-maker” from the
approved plan below. Use these sections: objective, explanation,
fictional example, practice task, answer guidance.
Use plain English. Mark any point that needs an expert check.
Do not invent customer testimonials, legal requirements or statistics.
Make the practice task test the objective, rather than simple recall.
Return clean text that I can edit before adding it to Thinkific.
Approved plan and notes: [paste]
Keep your reviewed text in a source document. Give downloads clear names and a version date. If you add a diagram or a video, decide what it teaches that the text does not. Avoid reproducing the same explanation in every format just to make the course look larger.
Use fictional client details in examples. Remove information you do not have permission to disclose before supplying material to an AI service or including it in a paid course.
Build the lessons in the Thinkific New Course Builder
Generate or create the structure, then fill each lesson with your reviewed content. In the documented outline workflow, open Products → Courses → New course builder, describe the course and select Build curriculum. Review the preview before selecting Create course.
Official reference: creating the course from an approved outline.
For our example, put the decision-maker explanation, a fictional conversation and the practice task into the first lesson. Put the blank brief in the next chapter, beside its worked example. Give each download a label that tells the learner when to use it.
The New Course Builder supports text, video, images, PDFs and other content within lessons. Its documented PDF upload limit is 25 MB. Keep long supporting documents separate from the central teaching sequence, and tell learners which parts they need.
Official reference: adding lesson content in the New Course Builder.
Open the learner preview after building your first complete lesson. Check the heading order, links, downloads and the transition to the exercise. Correct one chapter before repeating its layout across the rest of the course.
Generate Thinkific quizzes from content or import ChatGPT questions
Choose the quiz path from the material you already have. Native generation is useful when your lesson content is ready. Import is useful when you already have a reviewed question set.
Path A: use Thinkific’s AI Quiz Generator
The generator is available on Basic and above. It can use text, PDFs and captioned video lessons in the same chapter. PDFs must contain selectable text; image-only scans cannot be processed. Video generation is still being rolled out to some creators. The New Course Builder also offers generation from pasted text.
Official reference: AI Quiz Generator inputs and availability.
For our brief-writing course, ask questions that distinguish a confirmed deliverable from an assumption. Review each correct answer and explanation against the lesson. A plausible AI-generated answer is not enough: the learner must have been taught how to reach it.
Path B: prepare questions with ChatGPT, then use the XLSX template
From the approved lesson below, propose six multiple-choice questions.
Each question must test a decision the learner has practiced.
Return the question, answer choices, correct answer, explanation,
and the lesson passage supporting it.
Use realistic wrong answers, but avoid ambiguity and trick wording.
Flag questions that cannot be answered from the lesson.
Do not claim the output is already a Thinkific import file.
Approved lesson: [paste]
After reviewing the questions, fill Thinkific’s official .xlsx quiz template. Keep its fields unchanged and its question sheet named QUESTIONS. The documented import uses SA for a single correct answer and MA for multiple correct answers; an asterisk marks each correct answer. The file limit is 1 MB, with up to 150 rows in New and 500 in Classic.
Official reference: quiz import instructions and downloadable template.
A quiz belongs to the teaching sequence. If the learner gets an item wrong because the lesson never explains the distinction, improve the lesson before making the quiz harder.
Which Thinkific plan does this AI-assisted course need?
Basic can fit a straightforward course; Start adds completion certificates and recurring memberships. The example above does not need an API or an enterprise connector merely because ChatGPT helped draft it.
| Your requirement | Plan to consider | Decision for this example |
|---|---|---|
| Course delivery and AI quiz generation | Basic | Consider for a simple paid mini-course. |
| Completion certificates or memberships | Start | Choose when one of these is part of the offer. |
| API access and webhooks | Grow | Relevant only when your integration needs them. |
On October 10, 2026, Thinkific lists Basic at $54/month and Start at $109/month with monthly billing, in USD. Those are platform subscription costs, not your course price. Payment processing and applicable taxes can add costs. Recheck the official options before subscribing.
Official reference: current plans and feature requirements.
Set up payment, publish the course and explain access
A completed curriculum is only one part of the product. The buyer also needs a clear promise, a purchase route and an understandable first step after enrollment.
For the mini-course, a one-time payment is a simple illustrative model. Thinkific also supports subscriptions and payment plans, depending on the applicable requirements. Set the intended enrollment duration: the product-pricing guide says leaving it unset gives enrolled students unlimited access to that product.
Official reference: product pricing and enrollment duration.
Before using the phrase “lifetime access,” decide what ongoing hosting and maintenance you can actually commit to. For our example, write the access period explicitly and explain whether future revisions are included.
Configure a supported payment provider for your business location. Fees vary with country, currency, payment method and other factors; do not budget on the assumption that the platform subscription covers every cost of collecting a payment.
Official reference: payment availability and processing fees.
Make the product page specific: who the course helps, the task learners will complete, the included lessons and downloads, and the access period. Show a short sample of the teaching. Do not turn the fact that you used AI into evidence of quality or a promise of income.
Thinkific distinguishes Draft, Pre-order and Published products. Draft prevents purchase and enrollment. Pre-order allows purchase and enrollment without access to the course content. Published allows purchase, enrollment and content access, subject to the course’s release settings. For a ready-to-deliver course, follow the documented Publish now flow.

Check the learner journey before sending traffic
Inspect the experience from the buyer’s point of view, not only from the course editor. Thinkific’s publishing checklist calls for checking missing content, lesson draft settings, payment integration and the student preview.
Official reference: the official pre-publication checklist.
- Promise: does the first lesson explain the task the buyer came to learn?
- Navigation: can a new learner find the worksheet and understand where to go next?
- Practice: can they complete the brief from the explanation, without asking you to fill its gaps?
- Assessment: does every question have a defensible answer supported by the material?
- Offer: do the product page, price and access duration match what you configured?
- Delivery: does the intended enrollment route lead to accessible content, rather than an empty or future-release lesson?
Keep a simple issue log: screen or lesson, expected behavior, observed behavior and correction. Review desktop and mobile presentation separately. After your first learners arrive, use their actual questions to improve the teaching rather than expanding the curriculum speculatively.
Thinkific AI course creation: practical questions
Does Thinkific AI write the complete course?
The new builder’s AI outline generator creates chapter and lesson titles. You add the teaching content separately. ChatGPT drafts still need your review before publication.
Can I upload ChatGPT quiz questions to Thinkific?
Yes, after placing the reviewed questions into Thinkific’s official XLSX template. Preserve its fields and use the required QUESTIONS sheet. This is a file import, not a direct ChatGPT connection.
Can Thinkific generate quizzes from scanned PDFs?
The AI Quiz Generator requires selectable PDF text. An image-only scan cannot be processed. Prepare a readable text version and check that conversion has preserved the material correctly.
Which Thinkific plan do I need for AI quizzes and certificates?
AI quiz generation is available on Basic and above. Completion certificates are included in Start and above. Choose the plan from the features your course needs, not from the fact that you drafted it with AI.
Do I need Thinkific Plus for this ChatGPT workflow?
No. This guide uses ChatGPT as a separate drafting tool and Thinkific for course delivery. It does not require a native AI connector or an enterprise learning assistant.
Why can students purchase my course but not open its lessons?
Check whether the product is in pre-order rather than published status. Also check the release settings for its chapters and lessons. Publishing a product does not resolve every content-visibility setting.
