Chatbase Shopify Integration: Setup, Order Tracking & Limits

Connect the native app, choose a manageable set of Actions and check what actually happens in Shopify. The important decision is which customer journey you want the agent to complete.

Does Chatbase integrate with Shopify? Yes. The native Shopify app connects an agent to product, cart, order and customer-account Actions. Installation does not require manually pasting an embed script. Enable the app on the published theme, then configure each Action and its supported channels. Guest order lookup requires matching order details; some account operations require a signed-in customer. Installation source · Action requirements.

Choose the customer journey before connecting the store

Start with a specific request: “Where is my order?”, “Which size is available?” or “I need to return this item.” Each needs different information and may change a different Shopify record. Connecting the store alone does not define the agent’s permissions, return rules or human fallback.

Worth evaluating for

A merchant who needs storefront answers tied to a live catalogue or identifiable orders, and can maintain policies, check exceptions and own the support handoff.

Check another requirement first

If the essential task is cancelling a placed order, editing its shipping address or approving every refund manually, the native Actions described below do not provide that complete workflow.

This guide covers the native Chatbase Shopify app. A Make or Zapier automation linking the two services is a separate workflow with its own triggers, permissions and failure handling. For the broader product decision, plan costs and credit estimates, read our Chatbase review.

Which Shopify Actions should you enable?

Count the distinct Actions in your chosen journey before choosing a plan. The current Shopify listing shows five Actions for Hobby, eight for Basic and twelve for Business. Those allowances are separate from message credits, Procedures and feature access; Basic also lists the Helpdesk inbox. An integration being included does not establish that every support configuration fits. Shopify listing · Current Chatbase plan comparison.

Our planning examples: one enabled Action per listed tool, no extra variants. These configurations have not been installed or tested.
Proposed configurationDistinct ActionsWhat the count tells you
Product answers + order lookup + ticket3: products, orders and Escalations.Within five slots; check access to the selected ticket/Helpdesk route separately.
Shopping + order support + ticket6: products, update cart, get cart, create order, retrieve orders and Escalations.Exceeds Hobby’s five slots in this example. Remove an unneeded tool or assess another eligible plan.
Previous setup + approved exchange + live chat8: the previous six, plus new-order exchange and Chatbase Live Chat.Uses all eight slots of an eight-Action allowance. Helpdesk and staffing still matter.
Previous setup + same-order returns9: the previous eight, plus same-order return/exchange.Exceeds Basic’s eight slots. Check whether you really need both exchange mechanisms.
All 11 Shopify functions + both human routes13: eleven documented Shopify Actions, Escalations and Chatbase Live Chat.Exceeds Business’s twelve slots. Enabling everything requires a different scope or arrangement.

These are arithmetic examples, not plan recommendations or estimates of resolved chats. A different tool selection changes the count. Additional versions of an Action may use more slots. Confirm the count, feature entitlements and channel compatibility in the actual account.

Download the five configuration examples (CSV). The file lists each tool so you can remove steps you do not need. Use the review’s credit estimator separately for usage costs.

A sensible first scope

For an order-support pilot, start with a verified lookup, a delivery-policy answer and a defined route for exceptions. Adding cart edits, account changes and returns immediately makes it harder to tell which part needs attention. This is our rollout recommendation, not a tested Chatbase performance claim.

Connect through Chatbase or the Shopify App Store?

The installation documentation describes two account routes. Choose by billing and account needs before installing; both use the native app. The seven-day trial belongs to the direct Chatbase route, not to accounts created through the Marketplace. Official route comparison.

Documented account-route differences; feature eligibility can still depend on the plan.
DecisionThrough ChatbaseThrough Shopify Marketplace
Billing and trialChatbase billing; seven-day trial documented.Shopify billing; no seven-day Chatbase trial documented.
Agent countThe account can support multiple agents, but only one connects to a given store. One agent per account.
Add-onsBroader add-on access, subject to eligibility.Auto-recharge credits only, according to the integration guide.

If you already have a Chatbase agent and want to retain Chatbase billing, use that account’s connection flow. If consolidated Shopify billing is the priority, review the Marketplace restrictions first. Do not assume installing through one route gives every feature advertised elsewhere.

How to install Chatbase on the published Shopify theme

Have an agent set to public and Shopify access that permits app installation. The steps below follow the native integration guide; a visible bubble is the first confirmation, not proof that every Action is ready. Current installation instructions.

  1. Select the agent and open Shopify setup. In Chatbase, use Channels → Shopify → Setup, or Integrations → Shopify → Connect.
  2. Enter the store subdomain. For example.myshopify.com, enter example in the documented store-name field. Submit to start Shopify authorization.
  3. Review and authorize the app. Inspect the permissions Shopify presents, install, then check for the connection confirmation in Chatbase.
  4. Enable the integration on the active theme. Open Channels → Shopify → Manage, turn on its toggle and select the theme currently published. In Shopify’s theme editor, enable the Chatbase app embed and save the theme settings.
  5. Check the public storefront. Open a normal storefront page and send a basic question. If the bubble is absent, also check Channels → Chat Bubble → Overview → Visibility.
  6. Add the required Actions. Select the Shopify templates, configure their behavior, enable compatible channels and check the public version before validating the customer journey.

For a Marketplace-created account, start from the official Shopify listing, approve the installation and finish Chatbase onboarding; the theme and visibility checks still apply. Do not paste a second generic embed script into the theme for this native installation.

Recheck the app embed after publishing a replacement theme. Shopify documents app embeds as theme settings; a working draft preview is not evidence that the same setting is active on the published storefront. Shopify app-embed guidance.

Keep products, policies and private orders separate

Use catalogue sync for products and maintained sources for policies

Enable Retrieve and display products and complete its Products sync step. The native Action supplies the Shopify catalogue, so Chatbase recommends excluding product and collection paths from website training sources instead of training the agent on duplicate product pages. Keep shipping, returns and other policy material as separately maintained knowledge. Catalogue setup · Data Sources.

Use a known product as a check: compare its variant, price and destination with Shopify after sync. If availability looks wrong, inspect the configured stock filter and resync state before changing the agent’s instructions. A confident answer is not evidence of fresh stock.

How guest order tracking works

A guest can retrieve an order using the checkout email plus order number, or phone number plus order number. Signed-in customer lookup uses the authenticated account. This does not make every Shopify Action available to guests: order tagging, profile changes and billing-address changes require a signed-in customer. Identity and Action requirements.

Configure Retrieve and display orders and verify a matching request as well as a deliberately incorrect combination. Your acceptance criterion should include withholding another customer’s data and giving a clear follow-up route when verification fails. Do not put private order records into public training pages to bypass this step.

Order tracking reflects the information available through Shopify. If tracking is missing or a delivered status is disputed, the agent should explain the available record and route the exception; this is not an independent carrier investigation.

Check the object being read or changed, rather than relying on a general “Shopify connected” status.
ObjectUseful checkWhat it does not establish
CatalogueCurrent variant, price and stock behavior match the store. That policy documents are current too.
CartItems and quantities in the actual storefront cart changed. That the theme’s counter refreshed.
Customer profileThe intended account field changed in a signed-in session. That an existing order’s shipping address changed.
Order or paymentThe Shopify record shows the expected order and payment state. That generating a checkout link completed payment.
Support ticketA ticket exists with sufficient context for the team. That a person replied or approved an operation.

Returns and exchanges: two different approval models

Chatbase does not use one universal approval rule for Shopify returns. The new-order exchange Action waits for a Helpdesk decision. The same-order return/exchange Action currently operates automatically, with a Helpdesk approval option described as forthcoming. Choose the mechanism before allowing the agent to handle a customer request. Current return and exchange behavior.

Documented mechanisms, checked for this guide. A planned approval feature is not treated as available.
ActionResult and approvalImportant boundary
Create exchange (new order)Builds an exchange draft path and a Helpdesk ticket. The exchange order waits for human approval.Exchanges only; not a plain-refund Action. Compatible with the documented web and messaging channels.
Create return or exchange (same order)Returns/refunds or swaps items against the existing order. Currently completes without native Helpdesk approval.Chat Bubble and Help Page only. Return window defaults to 30 days; exchanges are off by default.

Set the return window to the merchant’s actual policy and review whether exchanges should be enabled. If your team must approve every return, do not enable the automatic path on the assumption that a ticket will appear. Use a human handoff for those requests until the required approval workflow has been verified.

The documented native Actions do not cancel an already placed order or change its shipping address. Updating a customer’s billing address changes an account record. Those exceptions need a person or a separately designed integration; describing them as the same operation would mislead the customer.

Keep Procedures compatible with the channel

A Procedure can coordinate a defined journey, but every Action it references must be available on the current channel. This includes conditional branches: a web-only return Action can make a mixed Procedure unavailable on WhatsApp even if that branch was not going to run. Review all dependencies, not only the last tool called. Procedure execution rules.

Escalations creates a ticket for later follow-up; Chatbase Live Chat connects to the enabled Helpdesk for a live handoff. They require different customer expectations. Decide who monitors the queue and what happens outside staffed hours. Escalations · Live Chat.

Troubleshoot the symptom before rewriting the prompt

Diagnostic checks to perform; these are possible causes, not confirmed diagnoses of your store.

These checks combine the installation guide, Shopify Action troubleshooting and Procedure rules. For login issues, record which Shopify customer-account model the store uses. Shopify distinguishes passwordless customer accounts from legacy password-based accounts; this guide does not establish compatibility with every variation. Shopify account comparison.

Verify the result in Shopify, not just a successful chat

A passing Chatbase test does not prove that an order or refund happened. Mock Actions return simulated responses. Built-in read-only Actions can use Live mode, while write Actions and Custom Actions cannot run Live in the documented test system. Inspect the response mode before interpreting a green result. Test execution limits.

The Playground also lacks a real storefront session: cart changes do not work there, and it cannot confirm completion of an online payment. Account-specific Actions need an authenticated storefront customer. A production-like check must therefore include the relevant channel, session and Shopify result. Store-session limits.

  1. Record the setup. Note the agent version, enabled Actions, channel, customer-session type and chosen policy settings.
  2. Check the ordinary case and an exception. For lookup, use a matching order and a mismatched identifier. For a return, include a request outside the configured window.
  3. Observe each system. Compare the chat’s claim with the Shopify order, cart or return record and, where required, the Helpdesk ticket and approval state.
  4. Keep evidence and unresolved items. Record expected versus observed behavior. Distinguish a mocked result from a read-only call or a controlled write on your own test data.

The CSV contains 24 proposed cases covering installation, catalogue freshness, guest identity, orders, carts, payments, returns, handoff and language. Every case starts as NOT RUN, with empty fields for your observation and evidence.

Download the 24-case Shopify verification checklist (CSV)

Use controlled test orders for checks that write data. Review application permissions separately from which Actions you enable; turning off an agent tool is not evidence that Shopify app permissions were revoked.

Publishing and rollback have a boundary

Drafts help you stage supported agent configuration, but connections, data sources and some settings can take effect immediately. Restoring an agent version does not reverse a Shopify operation or restore a previous knowledge base. Keep source changes and store operations in your deployment record. Version scope.

Chatbase Shopify integration FAQ

Do I need to paste the Chatbase embed code into Shopify?

No manual embed script is required for the native Shopify app. Check the integration toggle, Chat Bubble visibility and the Chatbase app embed on the published theme. A separate generic script is not part of this documented setup.

Can a guest customer track an order?

Yes, with matching checkout email and order number, or phone number and order number. Signed-in lookup uses the customer’s account. This guest support does not extend to every account-editing Action.

Does every exchange or refund require human approval?

No. New-order exchanges wait for Helpdesk approval. Same-order returns and exchanges currently execute automatically; the documentation describes their approval option as forthcoming. Verify the selected Action before enabling it.

Can Chatbase change a placed order’s shipping address?

The documented native Shopify Actions cannot change that shipping address or cancel a placed order. Updating the customer’s billing address changes the profile, not the placed order. Route the order request to a person.

Can I use the integration to make products visible in ChatGPT?

This integration handles conversations with your store’s agent; it does not establish visibility in external AI search. That separate topic is covered in our Shopify product visibility in AI search guide.

How this guide was researched

SmartCreatorHub reviewed Chatbase’s native installation, Shopify Actions, testing and version documentation, the official Shopify app listing and relevant Shopify help pages. Research was conducted on 31 October 2026, with core installation and Action sources rechecked on 1 November. Public documentation can change; verify the settings shown in your account before relying on a workflow.

The configuration counts, object checks and rollout recommendations are our analysis. The downloadable checklist is a proposed protocol, with no executed merchant-store results. We have not measured accuracy, resolution rate, conversion uplift or refund performance.

For the overall software decision, use the Chatbase review. For storefront page-building choices, see PageFly vs GemPages; changing a page builder does not replace the published-theme integration check.
