Internal linking guide

Does KoalaWriter Add Internal Links to Existing Posts?

By SmartCreatorHub · · Version française

If you just published a new article and want an older post to link to it, the link has to go on the older post. KoalaWriter can add links to the article it generates, including a rewrite based on an existing URL. To add links to a page that is already live, use KoalaLinks to insert them when the page loads, or add approved links directly to the published HTML. KoalaWriter vs KoalaLinks for existing posts

Start with the page that should contain the link. If the source is a draft, configure linking during generation. If the source is an older article already on your site, decide whether the anchor should be inserted when that page loads or saved in the page itself.

How to get an internal link from an old post to a new one

Suppose A is your older guide and B is the new article. To give B an incoming link, place an anchor on A that points to B. An anchor on B pointing back to A is useful in its own right, but it serves the opposite direction. A sitemap can list B even if no article links to it. Google’s link guidance · Google’s sitemap guidance

  1. Find an older page that already discusses the topic. Look for a paragraph where the new article answers a reader’s next question. Check whether the paragraph already links to the same destination.
  2. Choose an anchor that describes B. Link an existing phrase when it fits. Add a short sentence if the reader needs context to understand why the destination is useful.
  3. Verify on A after the change. Open A and confirm the anchor points to B’s intended URL. For a link that should be independent of the snippet, check A’s initial HTML.

Will KoalaLinks Autopilot go back and update A when I publish B? Koala documents analyzing newly published content and linking from that content to relevant pages in the existing index. Its public description does not confirm that publishing B automatically reanalyzes A to add A → B. Check A’s suggestions and its rendered output before counting that link. Autopilot documentation

How to verify internal links on a static site

Open the source page in your browser. Search its page source for the destination URL or relative path, then inspect the rendered link in the browser’s Elements panel. Look for an actual <a href> element in each view. A URL inside a script or metadata field alone does not show that an anchor is present. If the anchor appears only in Elements, it was added after the initial HTML arrived. Crawlable link markup · Inspect rendered HTML

SmartCreatorHub example

In our v67 site archive, the initial HTML of the KoalaWriter review contains a link to the WordPress draft guide. The ChatGPT vs KoalaWriter comparison also points to that guide. Both are incoming links for the draft guide because the anchors are on the other pages.

To reproduce the check on the archived review, search its source for the destination path. This is the anchor we found:

<a href="/en/koalawriter-to-wordpress">how to send a KoalaWriter article to WordPress as a draft</a>

For a newly suggested link, record the source URL, the destination and the anchor text. Check that exact combination in both views. If the same destination also appears in your navigation, inspect the link inside the article body to see whether the contextual edit took effect.

We checked the 215 pages in that archive’s sitemap. None contained the class .entry-content, the default article selector shown in Koala’s snippet documentation. A different class, .review-article, appeared on 53 pages. On a static Netlify site with several templates, inspect the article container on each template you plan to cover before relying on a shared selector. Koala documents a configurable articleSelector. In a separate local Chromium demonstration, an anchor written into the HTML was present with JavaScript off and on. A second anchor, inserted by a demonstration script, appeared only with JavaScript on. That test isolates the difference between initial HTML and browser rendering.

Check destinations on bilingual sites

KoalaWriter documents selecting or excluding whole sitemaps. In v67, our sitemap contained 81 URLs under /en/ within the 215 total. If your sitemap mixes languages, check the suggested destination on a sample of articles in each language. The setup guide does not establish that writing in English automatically filters a shared index to English pages. Sitemap selection · Writer API settings

Can ChatGPT Search discover links added by KoalaLinks?

A KoalaLinks anchor can become visible after the script runs. Whether a search crawler executes it, extracts the anchor, follows the destination and later cites that page are separate questions. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search discovery and ChatGPT-User for certain on-demand visits. Its crawler documentation does not promise that the KoalaLinks snippet will run or that its anchors will be followed. OpenAI crawler documentation

A controlled crawl experiment measured whether bots reached pages that were discoverable only through injected links. Separately, an October 2026 experiment reported that verified OAI-SearchBot requests reached an endpoint triggered by JavaScript on one site. The latter provides evidence of script execution in that setup. It does not establish that KoalaLinks anchors are followed or cited in ChatGPT Search. For an important link, putting an anchor in the initial HTML lets you verify its availability without waiting for rendering. Link discovery experiment · October 2026 execution observation

Do KoalaLinks links stay if you cancel or remove the snippet?

  • Cancel the subscription. Koala says the snippet continues to serve links on analyzed pages and that the links can be exported. KoalaLinks FAQ
  • Remove the snippet. Anchors that depended on that snippet stop being inserted when the page loads without it. Inspect the page source to see which links were already saved in the page. How insertion works
  • Save selected anchors in your own HTML. Once you publish those edits, they are part of the page response. Review each source URL, target URL and anchor text before migrating. Koala’s API HTML response is a documented way to obtain markup to review. API response formats

How many credits does it take to link existing posts?

Koala distinguishes indexing URLs from analyzing pages. It documents free indexing and two credits per analyzed page. Analyzing 200 pages once would therefore use 400 credits. The internal linking API uses one credit per request and analyzes about the first 2,500 words of the submitted content, so longer pages may require more than one call. These calculations use the published rates. Page analysis rates · API limits

If you only need to give a new article an incoming link, start with the old pages where the link would help readers. Then verify that the chosen pages actually carry the anchor.
